But what of the lore behind its name? The tilberi are creatures in Icelandic folklore, said to be created by witches to steal milk for making butter. A witch is said to create tilberi using a rib from a recently buried body, some stolen wool, and sanctified wine. After 3 weeks of tender care, the tilberi will become fully alive, and the witch will send it out to suck milk from sheep and cows. The witch can use the tilberi for as long as she wants, but not without danger. If she has a child of her own, the tilberi may steal her milk until she dies. The only way she can be rid of her little minion is to send it up to the mountain to collect lamb droppings in piles of three, or sourced from three pastures. It's believed that evil creatures can't tolerate the number three, so either the creature will work itself to death or die by number association. Once the creature dies, only the rib will remain.
