About the Bar
This amazing bar is made with local honey, house-made oat milk, colloidal oats, and silk. It's a fitting tribute to bees, who are amazing and underappreciated creatures. They contribute so much to us by pollenating our crops, helping us have beautiful flowers in our gardens, and (in the case of honeybees) providing us with honey and beeswax. But did you know it's bad luck for beekeepers not to tell the bees about a big life change?
While its origins are up for debate, this custom was widely practiced in Europe and eventually made its way to Appalachia and the southern United States. It likely stems from the belief that bees are a bridge between nature and the afterlife. If there is a birth, death, or marriage, or if someone leaves home on a voyage or returns home from one, someone is expected to knock on the hives and inform the bees about it. Some folks would even provide some of the funeral biscuits for the bees, or in the case of weddings, leave them some cake or invite the bees to attend. Even the royal beekeepers for Queen Elizabeth II made sure to inform the hives of her passing. It is said that if no one tells the bees, then they cannot go into proper mourning, and they may leave the hive, stop producing honey, or die. If the bees are kept up to date, it is said to bring good fortune, or at the very least prevent misfortune, particularly in the case of weddings.
