About The Bar
Baba Yaga is a well-known figure in Slavic folklore. One of three sisters, she is described as a fearsome, deformed old woman who lives in a hut held up by chicken legs. The hut lies behind a gate made of bones and rotates constantly unless someone approaches it and utters the words, “Little house, little house, turn your back to the forest, your front to me.” You may ask yourself, why would anyone willingly go there? The tales say young people would pay her a visit as a rite of passage into adulthood. If you go to her for guidance, she will test you, determine your worthiness, give you tasks, and instruct you on adulthood and household life. She may give you gifts, or, if the more sinister stories are to be believed, she may even eat you. It’s Baba Yaga’s choice whether to help or hinder you, make you rich, or collect your bones. If you’re hiking through the forest late at night, keep an eye on the sky. You never know when you might see her flying above, riding a bucket and broom (or a mortar and pestle as other stories say). Tales of her date back to the 1700s and share similarities with other hag-like figures in legends around the world. You may have even seen a version of her in season two of The Witcher, a series that borrows quite a bit from Slavic legend. Our Baba Yaga soap features her hut on the bar face amidst swirls of forest green.
