About the Bar
The Deer Woman is a powerful spirit with deer-like features who appears in the legends of some Native American tribes. She is associated with love and fertility and is said to aid women in childbirth. But she is also believed to be a vengeful spirit, murdering men who have cheated on their wives or committed violence against women and children. While she has been portrayed as a monster in horror movies, many see her as a defender of Indigenous women and as a symbol of a woman's power and resilience in the wake of violence. Deer Woman soap contains cedarwood essential oil, cornsilk, sweetgrass-infused sunflower oil, and sage to represent some of the plants traditionally used for food or ceremonial practices in Indigenous cultures. While white sage (Salvia Apiana) is the species considered sacred, culinary sage (Salvia Officinalis) was used in this soap as a symbolic substitute. The sweetgrass-infused sunflower oil was graciously gifted by co-collaborator, Crow, who helped design this soap. 100% of the proceeds from this soap go to the National Indigenous Women's Resource Center (www.niwrc.org), which provides resources, support, advocacy, training, and policy development to end violence against Indigenous women.
