About the Bar
Suffragette soap is a tribute to all the activists who put their bodies and their lives on the line to secure women's right to vote. The design is inspired by the posters and ribbons used by suffragists in the British Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU). Purple was chosen for loyalty and dignity, white for purity, green for hope. After decades of work, women secured the right to vote in the United States in 1920 through the 19th Amendment and in Britain in 1928. And the fight carried on worldwide for decades more, through the 20th century and even into the 21st century. Saudi Arabian women are the latest to be given this right. In 2015, they were finally given the right to vote and to run in elections. The term "suffragette" was coined in the British media to mock and minimize suffragists. Some women embraced the term, while others were offended by it. I used the term here because it's the one most familiar to the average person, particularly following the 2015 movie, Suffragette, which was inspired by the movement. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it.
